Angioplasty
Angioplasty restores blood flow to arteries that are hardened, narrow or blocked by plaque buildup. During this type of vascular surgery, your surgeon will thread a thin catheter through a blood vessel into the affected artery. Then, the surgeon will place a small, thin balloon in the artery. When the balloon inflates, it pushes the plaque to the side of the artery wall so that blood can flow more easily. The catheter and balloon will then be removed, and blood can flow through the artery more easily.
Most people who undergo angioplasty can leave the hospital the day after their procedure. Recovery time is minimal, as well, with most patients able to return to work within a week, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
Artery Bypass
If one of your arteries is blocked, the specialists at McKenzie Medical Group Vascular Surgery may recommend this form of surgery. Artery bypass replaces or bypasses damaged arteries with vein grafts taken from other parts of your body. Blood flow is rerouted away from the blocked or damaged part of your artery.
If you require an artery bypass, you may need to stay in the hospital for two to seven days after treatment. Depending on the artery that was bypassed, continued to recover at home may take several weeks.
